Homeowners cautioned against using uncertified electrical contractors

Through Jonisayi Maromo Jul 26, 2021

Share this article:

Pretoria – The Free State Department of Employment and Labor has warned residents to beware of imposters posing as electricians and doing shoddy work they are unlicensed to do.

The warning came after the ministry opened criminal proceedings against a person who was in possession of a fraudulent registration certificate as an electrical contractor.

“The matter came to the attention of ministry occupational health and safety inspectors when a homeowner complained about an inferior electrical installation being made by the accused in his new home. The alleged impostor also issued a certificate of conformity for the electrical installation to confirm that the installation is safe and conforms to the standard, even if it was not, ”said the spokeswoman for the province. , Cebisa Siyobi.

After the owner’s complaint, the ministry began an investigation into the allegations and discovered that the accused had a fraudulent electrical contractor’s registration certificate and a die license.

“Only the Ministry of Employment and Labor is mandated to issue a letter of registration to a competent electrical contractor in accordance with rule 6 of the Electrical Installation Regulations 2009.

“Regulation 6 provides that” (1) No one may perform electrical installation work as an electrical contractor unless that person has been registered as an electrical contractor under these regulations ” , Siyobi said.

The accused never received a registration letter from the ministry.

“Owners of homes, buildings and businesses are therefore urged to ensure that they only appoint competent and legally registered electrical contractors to work on their electrical installations, as this will ensure the safety of the occupants of said structures,” Siyobi said.

“Obtaining the services of an uncertified electrician is therefore putting the lives of many people at risk, as dangerous electrical installations or wiring that does not meet applicable standards can cause electric shocks or fires. “

To verify the authenticity of any registration letter from an electrical contractor or to file an electrical complaint, members of the public may contact the Department of Employment and Labor.

Rapid price increases are now hitting electrical contractors and distributors

Consumers should prepare for higher prices and delays in residential power projects.

IRVINE, CALIFORNIA, UNITED STATES, June 21, 2021 /EINPresswire.com/ – As power supply shortages expand, electrical contractors are paying significantly more for copper wire and face significant challenges in restocking.

Raiven, a leading provider of procurement solutions for contractors and building owners, has reached out to electrical contractors, suppliers and distributors to find out if further price increases are underway:

Mark Cooper, President of H&D Electric, one of the largest electrical contractors in the Sacramento Valley, Calif., Comments, “We have been an electrical contractor for builders of single and multi-family homes since 1958. For the first time in my 30-year career, I had to call all of my home builders to inform them that I had to revise our contract to reflect the rapidly rising prices of copper wire. In the past, I’ve always been able to absorb the price increases, but that’s just not possible when my wiring cost has gone up over 200% [in] Last year”.

Brian Watson, owner of Watson’s Charging Stations & Electric, explains the inflationary pressures experienced: “We have installed thousands of electric vehicle charging stations and for every job we use copper wire. A month ago, yarn prices jumped 30%, and now they are up another 10% in less than two weeks. Inflation puts us in a very difficult situation with our customers because either I am not passing on the higher prices and we are losing money on the job, or I have to inform them that my estimate needs to increase.

What Can Electrical Contractors Do?

Contractors need to quickly find where electrical supplies are in stock and, preferably, at the lowest price. Doing this manually by searching for distributor websites and making numerous phone calls is labor intensive and inefficient.

Chris Davis of Spotlight Solar, a leader in solar and EV charging installations in New Jersey, explains, “Three months ago, I was able to go to my distributors and immediately find Romex.® or THHN in stock. It was more expensive, but at least I could find it. Now I find them out of stock. I resorted to online research but found it to be 2-8 weeks out of stock. It’s long and frustrating because I have clients who want solar installations, home chargers, battery storage and other electrical projects completed immediately.

Brett Knox, CEO of Raiven, describes how advancements in technology can help entrepreneurs save time and money in these situations: “Technology is now available that searches real-time among distributors to find product availability and current prices. Raiven launched his sophisticated algorithm in a browser extension during the pandemic to help contractors and facility managers find COVID essentials. It is now available for a wide variety of electrical, HVAC and building maintenance products. Knox continues, “Distributors have different levels of price sophistication. Some update prices daily while others may be months behind. In fact, Raiven’s algorithm found a major distributor that sells Romex cables and other NM-B cables 40% cheaper than their competition, so contractors are sourcing. Raiven’s algorithms continue to identify pricing anomalies and product availability for high demand and shortage products.

Disregard Fraudulent Petition to Remove ECG Boss – Ghana Electrical Contractors Association

General information for Sunday March 28, 2021

Source: happyghana.com

Kwame Agyeman-Budu; General Manager of Ghana Electricity Company

Ghana Electrical Contractors Association (GECA) President Nana Addo Tetebo described a petition against Mr. Kwame Agyeman-Budu; Managing Director (MD) of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and allegedly emanated from GECA as fraudulent and malicious.

According to him, all official letters of his outfit must be signed by authorized signatories on official letterhead but it was otherwise in the said petition to the Minister of Energy. The general public must therefore treat it with the contempt it deserves.

“We have neither issued a statement nor sent a petition to the president calling for the removal of Kwame Agyeman-Budu. All GECA letters have headers but this one does not. This letter is clearly politically motivated by unscrupulous guys, ”he told Don Kwabena Prah on Happy FM’s Epa Hoa Daben.

Nana Addo Tetebo added that there are issues regarding payments between GECA and ECG but the MD has done everything possible to resolve it and so as an association they have no reason to write a petition or protest against the MD from now on. “Yes, the ECG and PDS are owed to us, we have had several meetings with the ECG and there are plans well advanced on how the payment will be made. The petition is therefore sponsored by faceless personalities who want the post of CEO. “

On Thursday, March 25, 2021, a widely circulated petition to the Minister of Energy cited the delay in paying contractors’ fees, among other things, as reasons for the removal of the CEO of ECG. The said letter allegedly written by the GECA was refuted by the President of the GECA after addressing all the issues set out in the letter and also categorically stated that there were clear plans instituted by the ECG to settle the amounts owed to the members.

Colorado female head of the electrical contractors association

DENVER – Janet Martin of Colorado makes history during Women’s History Month. Earlier this year, she became the second woman to head the trade association of independent electrical contractors – an industry of which women make up only 10% in the United States.

Martin is vice president and owner of Bret’s Electric in Denver, a business she started with her husband in 1993. While she brought organizational skills to the business, she quickly found herself on construction sites.

“I was able to put together a lot of light fixtures, as well as a lot of ceiling fans,” Martin told Katie LaSalle of Denver7.

Martin became a member of IEC shortly after opening his company in 1993 and believes the value IEC provides to its members is invaluable. She gives Bret’s Electric a head start on major industry changes by serving on IEC national committees and attending events across the country.

“I know the positive impact and exceptional value that IEC provides to earn power companies across the country,” said Martin. “In addition to providing training to over 13,000 apprentice electricians each year, IEC is the leading voice of the Merit Stores community and supports our interests on Capitol Hill. During my 2021 term, the organization will place a particular emphasis on advocacy to ensure that we continue to grow and prosper during the new presidential administration. I look forward to giving back to the organization that has helped me achieve my success and goals.

Martin says the electrical industry is great for women, men, veterans and young people. The Rocky Mountain Section of IEC is organizing a job fair on April 14 to help inform people about learning opportunities and more.
